Best Buy’s Future?
Posted: April 10, 2012 Filed under: Uncategorized Leave a comment »Today has been a big day for people dropping out of things. First we got the news that Rick Santroum was dropping out of the presidential race. A couple of hours later we hear that Brian Dunn, the CEO of Best Buy is resigning. (We’ll of course focus on the latter here.)
While there are many reasons that have been thrown out there for Mr. Dunn’s sudden move, including the internal probe into “personal conduct,” one cannot underestimate the role that Best Buy’s lack of a new direction or inability to retain market share had in pushing Mr. Dunn out. Best Buy has be losing out online to online platforms like Amazon and offline to Apple and Walmart as the coolest and most affordable place to purchase the latest electronic, respectively.

Now, the question is whether the removal of the CEO should be considered separately from the state of the company. In other words, is Mr. Dunn’s exit the start of a huge unraveling for the electronics giant, or is it the simple ouster of a less than honest business executive. What do you think?
